Philosopher of the Heart is the groundbreaking biography of renowned existentialist Søren Kierkegaard’s life and creativity, and a searching exploration of how to be a human being in the world.Søren Kierkegaard is one of the most passionate and challenging of all modern philosophers, and is often regarded as the founder of existentialism. Over about a decade in the 1840s and 1850s, writings poured from his pen pursuing the question of existence—how to be a human being in the world?—while exploring the possibilities of Christianity and confronting the failures of its institutional manifestation around him.Much of his creativity sprang from his relationship with the young woman whom he promised to marry, then left to devote himself to writing, a relationship which remained decisive for the rest of his life. He deliberately lived in the swim of human life in Copenhagen, but alone, and died exhausted in 1855 at the age of 42, bequeathing his remarkable writings to his erstwhile fiancée. Clare Carlisle’s innovative and moving biography writes Kierkegaard’s life as far as possible from his own perspective, to convey what it was like actually being this Socrates of Christendom—as he put it, living life forwards yet only understanding it backwards.

I have read many biographies of Soren Kierkegaard but this one captivated me and filled out the life of the Danish writer in ways that are unique. So many of the biographies are extremely academic and assume a considerable knowledge of the philosophical and historical context of his time. Instead Dr. Carlisle introduces us to the human person of Kierkegaard and discusses his writings as arising from the struggles he had with himself, his relationships, and the culture of his day. Kierkegaard comes alive as he travels to Berlin and moves from one house to another in Copenhagen, walking the streets and conversing with his contemporaries. I would commend this book to anyone who looks to an accessible treatment of his life. I found that she filled out details of his life which other biographers omitted and invited us into his inner thoughts which gave rise to some of the most thought provoking discussion of the meaning of life from both secular and Christian perspectives. It is a book which I will reread because it was such a pleasure to enjoy and I am sure that I will discover new truths which I missed on my first reading. Her research and notes are prolific but they do not obscure or distract from her narrative. She has a gift of making the abstruse clear and the complex thought of Kierkegaard simple. What a delight to find a professional academic who can hold your attention and not overwhelm you with theoretical detail. She is a teacher who writes to interest and enlighten her readers rather than to impress her academic colleagues. Bravo.
